Technology Based Teaching and Development of 21st Century Competencies amongst Final Year Students in Public Universities in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon

The study investigated the integration of technology in teaching and the developed of 21st century competencies. Two research questions were formulated which were used to construct the questionnaire. The data was collected using a questionnaire for student and an interview guide for lecturers. The study employed the causal comparative research design. The population of this study was made up of all final year students and all permanent teachers of public Universities in the North West and South West Region of Cameroon. From this population 6314 students and 400 teachers from 8 selected school/faculty were obtained. From this, the sample size was made up of 362 students and 16 teachers. The purposive sampling technique, stratified proportionate sampling technique stratified disproportionate sampling technique were used. The Pearson Product Moment Co-relation Coefficient was used to establish the nature of the relationship between variables. Content analysis was used to analyze the interview results. The regression Analysis was used to further test the hypotheses. ANOVA results used to test the overall significance of the regression model. The findings underscore a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.655, indicating a moderately strong positive relationship between technology-based curriculum content and the development of 21st-century competencies and a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.653, indicating a moderately strong positive relationship between technology based instructional methods and the development of 21st-century competencies. The study thus recommended that curriculum planners integrate technology at the levels of curriculum content and curriculum instruction methods and ensuring specialized training to effectively implement content and methods for the development of higher-order thinking skills, problem solving , creativity amongst students which are all 21st century competencies.
