Contributions of the National Universities Commission to the Development of Universities Education in Nigeria

Abstract

This paper examines the various contributions of the National Universities Commission to the development of university education in Nigeria. Depending on print resources and online publications, the paper concluded that the National Universities Commission has contributed immensely to the development of university education. The paper specifically identified core areas of her contributions to include; policy design and implementation, programme accreditation, supervision of curriculum development, quality assurance programme, improved ranking of Nigerian universities internationally, expansion of university education/ massification of universities, distance learning education and trans-national education and improved funding of universities. Based on these contributions, the paper hereby recommended more funding to the commission to enable it to carry out its mandates by the government. Establishment of more offices in each political zone of Nigeria to improve the operations of the commission.
