Abstract

This research title The Challenges of Christianity on the Practice of Polygamy among the Bassosi People of Cameroon, looks at the challenges faced by Christians practicing polygamy among the Bassosi people of the south West Region of Cameroon. Using a qualitative research approach, the study investigates how Christian teachings and practices influence perceptions and experiences of polygamy within a deeply cultural context. Data was collected through interviews and observations with 15 participants from diverse backgrounds, including polygamous men and women, individuals from polygamous homes, and Christians of different denominations. The findings reveal significant tension between cultural traditions and Christian doctrines, with many participants expressing feelings of guilt, exclusion, and stigmatisation due to their marital status. Despite Christianity’s emphasis on monogamy, participants pointed to biblical references and cultural justifications for polygamy, highlighting the need for theological reflection and cultural sensitivity in church practices. The study concludes that the church’s rigid stance on polygamy often leads to marginalisation, emotional distress, backsliding and divorce among believers. It calls for open dialogue between church leadership and local communities to bridge the gap between cultural realities and Christian teachings.
