Abstract

The article explores the nature of linguistic categories and universal units as fundamental elements of human cognition and language structure. It investigates the genesis and functioning of universal units that underlie semantic categories, emphasizing their conceptual foundations. Particular attention is given to the dual nature of these units—both general (universal) and nationally specific—demonstrating how they reflect the interplay between shared human experience and culturally conditioned perception. The study draws on theoretical and cognitive linguistics to outline the mechanisms by which categories and universal units are conceptualized, categorized, and linguistically represented in different languages. It highlights the role of language in shaping worldview, illustrating the interconnection between linguistic form, cognitive processes, and national-cultural identity.
