Combating Violence in Cameroon Schools and Colleges: Analyzing a Pragmatist Approach to Peaceful Institutions

Abstract

Global trends have been indicating a steady rise in violence among pupils, students and school administrators in schools and colleges across the world. On a daily bases an approximated 1.3 billion students attend school across the globe. Excerpts from a 2018 UNICEF survey reveals that half of the world’s teens experience peer violence in and around school campuses. Against this background this paper launches an investigation to understand the different forms of school violence witnessed in schools and colleges as well as probes in to the reasons for a dramatic rise in violent behavioral patterns experienced by Students and Teachers in school campuses. It analyses a practical approach that can be adopted for the implantation of a peace culture in Cameroon schools and colleges by the various stakeholders involved. The study employs a thematic analytical approach based on rigorous analysis of data collected. The paper found out that violence in most cases is triggered by a combination of factors within and without the School environment. Notwithstanding drug abuse by students’ accounts for more than 75% of the cases of violence reported in Cameroon Schools. The paper therefore concludes that for a peace culture to be fully implemented in schools all over the world and Cameroon in particular, there must be an aggressive national campaign against substance abuse especially amongst Cameroonian students and youths.
