Abstract

This paper critically examined the problem militating against effective teaching and learning in the Post-Basic Education and Career Development (PBECD) in Nigeria. The paper is a position paper that depends on secondary data. The secondary data were collected from print and online publications. The paper revealed that poor funding, shortage of English language teachers, inadequate instructional resources, shortage of language laboratories, students’ attitude, mother tongue interference and poor supervision are the problem militating against teaching and learning of English Language in Post-Basic Education and Career Development (PBECD) in Nigeria. The paper concluded that English language programme is an important programme in the Nigerian educational system because it is a programme that is compulsory from the Basic education to the tertiary education. Based on this, the paper hereby recommends that government should increase the funding of Post-Basic Education and Career Development (PBECD) in Nigeria. Government should employ more professional teachers, provide more infrastructure facilities like laboratory labs, English language instructional resources and improve the supervision of English language in Post-Basic Education and Career Development (PBECD) in Nigeria.
