Abstract

Teacher education is a special education designed for the production of professional teachers. There are many teacher education institutions in Nigeria. The various teachers’ institutions have been producing various professional teachers that are presently working in various educational institutions in Nigeria. Teacher education in Nigeria is included in the tertiary education. Teacher education appear to be facing the problem of poor funding and this has affected the development. This paper examined the importance of adequately funding the teacher education in Nigeria. This paper employed the use of secondary data. The secondary data were obtained from print materials and online publications. The paper established that adequate funding of teacher education will guarantee; sufficient funds for administration of teacher education, employment of lecturers, provision of more infrastructure facilities, staff training, research development, strike actions control and improvement in quality and standard of teachers’ education. Based on these discoveries, the paper hereby recommended that the Nigerian government should increase the funding of teacher education. Government should create special intervention fund for the teacher education. Managers and administrators of teacher education should come with strategies to increase internally generated revenue of the various institutions. Private institutions are encouraged to support the funding of teachers’ education in Nigeria
